How to Buy Light (Formerly Yaka) in Uganda After the UEDCL Transition.

As of April 2025, Uganda’s electricity distribution has shifted from Umeme to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). With this change, the popular prepaid electricity system once called Yaka is now known as Light. Don’t worry—the process of buying electricity remains straightforward, and I’m here to guide you through the most popular options Ugandans use to purchase Light tokens, including mobile money, bank payments, and more.

While the name has changed to Light, the system works the same way: you buy a token, enter it into your meter, and keep your home powered. Let’s dive into the easiest ways to buy Light tokens

1. Mobile Money

The Most Popular Option Mobile money is the go-to method for most Ugandans because it’s fast, convenient, and available on your phone. Both MTN and Airtel support Light payments. Here’s how to do it:Using

MTN Mobile Money

1.Dial *165# on your MTN line.

2.Select 4 (Payments).

3.Choose 1 (Utilities).

4.Select 1( UEDCL Light) 

5.select option 2 (Light)

6.Enter your meter number (check your meter or a previous token receipt).

7.Input the amount you want to pay (e.g., UGX 5,000 or any).

8.Confirm with your PIN.

9.You’ll receive an SMS with a 20-digit token to enter into your meter.

Airtel Money

1. Dial *185# on your Airtel line.

2. Select 4 (Pay Bill).

3. Choose 1 UEDCL Light Pay 4. select option 2 (Buy Light Token)

5. Enter your meter number.

6. Specify the amount to pay and Confirm with your PIN.

7.An SMS with your token will arrive shortly.

 Tip: Double-check your meter number to avoid errors. If you don’t receive a token, contact UEDCL at 0800 185 185 or your mobile provider.

2.Bank Payments

For those who prefer banking—especially businesses or households with higher electricity needs—banks like Stanbic Bank and DFCU Bank are popular choices. You can pay over the counter or via mobile banking apps.

1.Paying at a Bank Branch Visit a bank branch (e.g., Stanbic, DFCU, or others listed by UEDCL).

2.Request a bill payment slip for UEDCL Light.

3.Provide your meter number and the amount you wish to pay.

4.Pay in cash or via account transfer.

5.The teller will give you a receipt and a 20-digit token to load into your meter.

6.Using a Mobile Banking, Log into your bank’s mobile app or dial their USSD code (e.g., *291# for Stanbic).

7.Navigate to Bill Payments or Utilities.Select UEDCL Light or Electricity.

8.Enter your meter number and amount.

9.Confirm the payment.

10.You’ll receive a token via SMS or email.
